My theory (sorry gonna ramble a bit, feel free to ignore and look at the pretty picture) is that Gamzee and his Lusus were kinda stuck in this odd limbo of custodians. All the purple bloods have water dwelling lusus, but Gamz is of course not water dwelling. I think this is why GoatDad had a hard time taking care of/caring about Gamzee.
However, I think Gamzee loved GoatDad very much and was very lonely and would wait for him by the water. He might have even gotten mad at GoatDad for not being there but always forgave him when he came home.
My dad left me, too... *pats head*
